From the airport to Amed, the long road east
Amed is at the end of the island, on the eastern tip, about 2 h 30 to 3 h by road from the airport. This transfer is not like the others: ride-hailing becomes scarce in the east, the end of the route follows a narrow coastal road, and a night arrival after a long flight is no restful start to a trip. It needs planning, it is done in daylight, and it can become a day of sightseeing.

In brief
- Time: about 2 h 30 to 3 h by car, not counting stops.
- Price: no official fare. A driver by the day or by the trip is negotiated in advance, stops included.
- Best time: leave in the morning, to arrive before nightfall on the coastal road.
- Good to know: in the east, ride-hailing is scarce; the return must be planned before you leave.
Between Denpasar airport and Amed, allow about 2 h 30 to 3 h by car. Book a driver in advance, travel in daylight, and plan a stop at Tirta Gangga or Klungkung to break the journey. No fare is official: set the price and the stops before leaving.
Amed refers to a whole coast of fishing villages, from Culik to Aas. From the airport, the road follows the southeast then climbs towards Agung, before ending on a narrow corniche above the sea. The region’s page is Amed.
In the 7-day itinerary, Amed replaces the south coast rather than being added to it. The 2-week itinerary reaches it from Sidemen, by a shorter road than the one from the airport.

The options to get from the airport to Amed
For Amed, only one option is really comfortable: the booked driver, by the trip or by the day, who can stop along the way. Ride-hailing may accept the ride from the airport, but finding a vehicle for the return from Amed is difficult. A scooter is not recommended over such a distance.
| Mode | Time | Indicative price | Who it suits | Luggage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Booked driver | About 2 h 30 to 3 h, plus stops | Set in advance, stops and waiting included | Everyone, especially families and tired arrivals | Large suitcase, no problem |
| Accommodation shuttle | About 2 h 30 to 3 h | Depends on the accommodation | Those whose hotel offers one | Fine |
| Grab or Gojek ride-hailing (car) | About 2 h 30 to 3 h | Shown in the app | Light travelers, outbound only | Depends on the category |
| Airport taxi | About 2 h 30 to 3 h | Price set before departure | Arrival without a booking | Fine |
| Scooter | Not recommended | Rental on the spot | Nobody, from the airport | Impossible with a suitcase |
Ask your accommodation in Amed: many work with a trusted driver and know flight arrival times. Have them confirm whether stops, fuel and parking are included.
The transfer, hour by hour
The first hour crosses the south and follows the bypass east. The second runs along the coast and the towns of the east. The last climbs towards Amlapura, then descends to the sea on a narrow, winding coastal road, where you drive slowly.
| Moment | What happens |
|---|---|
| First hour | Out of the airport, bypass east via Sanur |
| Second hour | Southeast coast; possible stop at the Klungkung court of justice (Kerta Gosa) |
| Third hour | Climb towards Amlapura; possible stop at the Tirta Gangga water palace |
| End of the transfer | Narrow coastal road to the village you chose, from Jemeluk to Aas |
Bring cash before you leave: in Amed, ATMs are rare and some accommodation or restaurants do not take cards.
The pitfalls of the airport–Amed transfer
The pitfalls: arriving on the coastal road at night, not planning the return, accepting a price without specifying the stops, and trying to do Amed as a day trip. Add fatigue: following a long flight with three hours on the road takes preparation.
- Landing late in the day and leaving anyway: the end of the transfer, coastal and narrow, is done in daylight. Sleep in Sanur.
- Leaving with no plan for the return: from Amed, ride-hailing is rare. Book the return driver as soon as you arrive.
- Negotiating a price without specifying the stops: Tirta Gangga or Klungkung add waiting time, which must be included.
- Planning Amed as an excursion from the south: the road costs two half days, you need to sleep there.
The smart alternative: going via Ubud or Sidemen
Rather than rushing from the airport to Amed, start with Ubud, then reach the east in one or two stages. From Ubud or Sidemen, the road to Amed is shorter than from the airport, and you discover the east gradually, without following a long flight with three hours in a car.
That is the route of the 2-week itinerary: Ubud, then Sidemen, then Amed. The stages are detailed on Ubud → Sidemen and Ubud → Amed.
The return: from Amed to the airport for your flight
Do not leave Amed on the day of an early flight: the 2 h 30 to 3 h on the road leave no margin. For an evening flight, leave in the late morning. Otherwise, end the stay with a night in Sanur or on the Bukit, closer to the airport.
| Flight time | Advice |
|---|---|
| Early morning | Not possible without stress: last night in Sanur, about 30 to 40 min from the airport |
| Midday | Best avoided: plan a night in the south |
| Late afternoon | Leave Amed early in the morning, with a wide margin |
| Evening or night | Leave in the late morning or early afternoon, possible stop at Tirta Gangga |
