Transfer · From the airport
From Denpasar airport to Ubud, without losing your evening
It is the first transfer of most trips to Bali, and often the worst experienced: after a long flight, the drive through Denpasar can double. Allow about 1 h 15 to 1 h 45 by car. The right choice comes down to two decisions: book the vehicle before you land, and sleep in the south if the plane lands late in the day.

In brief
- Time: about 1 h 15 to 1 h 45 by car, more at rush hour in Denpasar.
- Price: no official fare. A ride-hailing price shows before the ride, a driver’s price is set when you book.
- Best time: an arrival in the morning or early afternoon, before the late-afternoon traffic jams.
- Good to know: pay the tourist levy and fill in the arrival card online before the flight, to get out of the airport faster.
Between Denpasar airport and Ubud, allow about 1 h 15 to 1 h 45 by car. The simplest is a driver booked in advance through your accommodation; Grab or Gojek suit light travelers. No fare is official: set or check the price before you get in.
Ubud is in the center of the island, in the hills, and the airport in the south, on the Bukit isthmus. In between: Denpasar, its suburbs and its rush hours. The distance is short on the map; it is the traffic that sets the time. The region’s page is Ubud, the detail of the means of transport in getting around Bali.
This transfer opens the site’s four itineraries, from the 7-day itinerary to the 3-week one. If you arrive at night, first read the section on the alternative: a night in Sanur often changes everything.
On the ground and in the itineraries
The options to get from the airport to Ubud
Three serious options: the booked driver, who waits in the hall with your name; Grab or Gojek ride-hailing, ordered from a pick-up point; the airport taxi, at a price set before departure. A scooter is not an option after a long flight.
| Mode | Time | Indicative price | Who it suits | Luggage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Booked driver | About 1 h 15 to 1 h 45 | Set when booking, compare two or three offers | Families, late arrivals, first trip | Large suitcase, no problem |
| Grab or Gojek ride-hailing (car) | About 1 h 15 to 1 h 45 | Shown in the app before the ride | Light travelers, at ease with apps | Depends on the vehicle: check the category |
| Airport taxi | About 1 h 15 to 1 h 45 | Price set before departure, no negotiation possible | Those who have booked nothing | Fine |
| Hotel shuttle | About 1 h 15 to 1 h 45 | Depends on the hotel: sometimes included, often paid | Hotel stays that offer one | Fine |
| Scooter | Not recommended | Rental on the spot | Nobody, on arrival | Impossible with a suitcase |
The booked driver wins as soon as you arrive tired, in a group or with children: they wait for you, load the luggage and know the way to your accommodation, often badly signposted in Ubud’s lanes. Ride-hailing is often the cheapest, but pick-up happens at dedicated points, which you have to find with your suitcases.
The transfer, step by step
After landing, allow for immigration, baggage and leaving the hall before getting into the car. The road then follows the south, crosses Denpasar or goes around it, then climbs towards the hills. The last kilometers, in Ubud itself, are often the slowest.
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| Before the flight | Arrival card filled in on the official portal, tourist levy paid online, e-VoA obtained if needed |
| Leaving the plane | Immigration, then baggage claim and customs |
| Arrivals hall | Driver with a sign, taxi counter, or walk to the ride-hailing point |
| Leaving the airport | The southern road, often busy right from the exit |
| Denpasar | The part that makes the journey vary: traffic lights, two-wheelers, jams at rush hour |
| Climb to Ubud | Village roads, craft workshops, then Ubud’s main street |
Bring rupiah in small notes for a tip or parking, and a charged phone: your driver will often send you a message when you land.
The pitfalls of the airport–Ubud transfer
The pitfalls come down to four points: touts in the hall quoting a price with no reference, toll or parking added on arrival, rush hour in Denpasar, and a vague address in Ubud. All can be sorted out before getting into the car.
- Accepting the first offer in the hall: a driver who approaches you does not necessarily have a reference price. Go through the counter, an app or your booking.
- Not asking what is included: toll, airport parking, waiting if the flight is late. Have it confirmed in writing.
- Landing in the late afternoon and leaving straight away: the drive through Denpasar gets much longer at rush hour.
- Giving only the name of the hotel: in Ubud, many places are at the end of lanes. Send the driver the exact location.
The smart alternative: a first night in the south
If your plane lands late in the day or at night, spend the first night in Sanur, about 30 to 40 min from the airport, and go up to Ubud the next morning. You arrive rested, in daylight, and you avoid crossing Denpasar at the worst times.
The loss is half a day in Ubud; the gain, a first evening without a car and a first morning by the sea. The next day’s drive is outside rush hour, and the driver can stop on the way in a craft village. The details are on airport → Sanur.
The return: from Ubud to the airport for your flight
For the return flight, allow the same road, about 1 h 15 to 1 h 45, plus a margin for traffic jams and the check-in time set by your airline. For an early morning flight, rather end the stay in Sanur or on the Bukit: that is what all our itineraries do.
| Flight time | Advice |
|---|---|
| Early morning | Do not leave from Ubud: spend the night before in Sanur or near the airport |
| Midday | Leave Ubud early in the morning, with a wide margin for Denpasar |
| Late afternoon | Leave in the late morning; avoid setting off in the middle of rush hour |
| Evening or night | Leave in the afternoon, or spend the last night in the south to enjoy the day |
Book the driver for the return the day before at the latest, through your accommodation. It is also a chance to confirm the departure time, the terminal and what is included in the price.

How much does a taxi from the airport to Ubud cost?
There is no official fare for this transfer. A ride-hailing price shows in the app before the ride, a driver’s price is set when booking: compare two or three offers and ask whether toll and parking are included.
