First trip to Bali: ten decisions to make in order

A first stay in Bali rarely goes wrong because of the island. It goes wrong because the decisions are made in the wrong order: you book a hotel before knowing how many bases you want, then discover that the road eats up your days.

Key points

  • Decide in order: length of stay, season, number of bases, the bases, and only then accommodation and activities.
  • One base for three to four nights: in a week, Ubud then the sea is enough.
  • Plan for the e-VoA (IDR 500,000) and the tourist levy (IDR 150,000) per person, to be paid on the official websites.
  • Live Bali early in the morning: the sites are calm, the light beautiful and the heat bearable.

This guide does not say what to see: that is the job of things to do in Bali. It says in which order to decide, so that a first trip fits on the map and within your days off. Each decision closes or opens the next ones; making them in the wrong order costs badly placed nights and hours in the car.

Still hesitating about the destination itself? The comparisons set Bali against Thailand, Lombok and Phuket, criterion by criterion. If Bali is decided, follow the ten steps below.

The 10 decisions of a first trip, in order

First set the length of stay and the season, then the number of bases and their order on the map. Next come the flight and arrival, accommodation, transport on the island, budget, paperwork, the activities that require booking, and finally a day with nothing planned. Hotels are chosen late, not first.

The ten decisions of a first trip to Bali, what depends on them and where to find the answer

Decisions 1 to 4 are made before booking anything. The others fall into place afterwards, in order.

The length of stay governs everything. The site’s itineraries give two bases for 7 days, three for 10 days, more from two weeks. The season comes right after: it decides not only the rain, but also the state of the sea, the trails and the prices. The guide when to go to Bali and the month-by-month pages, such as Bali in May, answer this question.

How many bases, and which ones, for a first time

Allow one base for three to four nights. In a week, Ubud for culture and rice fields, then the sea, in Uluwatu or Sanur. In ten days, add the rural east, Sidemen. Beyond that, Amed, Munduk or Nusa Penida. Start inland, end near the airport.

3 weeksThe tour of the island, north includedAlmost nothing, except rest

Ubud is the best first base: rice fields, evening dances, water temples and markets are within reach. For the sea, Sanur suits those who want calm and a sheltered sea, Uluwatu those who like cliffs and waves. Ending near the airport avoids a long drive on the day of the return flight.

Arrival: paperwork, first night, first transfer

Before departure, pay the e-VoA and the tourist levy on the official websites, and fill in the free All Indonesia arrival card. If the plane lands in the evening, sleep near the airport, in Sanur about 30 to 40 min away, rather than going up to Ubud at night.

The passport must have sufficient validity, as a rule six months, and a return ticket is required. The details of the procedures and the websites to use, with no paying middleman, are in Bali visa and arrival.

From the airport, allow about 1 h 15 to 1 h 45 for Ubud, 45 to 60 min for Uluwatu. The page airport → Ubud compares driver, ride-hailing and taxi, and explains when a first night in the south is more sensible.

Beginner mistakes in Bali

The most common mistakes: changing base every two days, booking the hotel before setting the bases, underestimating transfers, renting a scooter without a license or experience, paying the e-VoA on a middleman website, returning from Nusa Penida on the day of the flight and filling every day.

  1. Changing accommodation every two days: each change costs half a day of driving and luggage.
  2. Trusting the distances on the map: traffic in the south and narrow roads often double the expected times.
  3. Renting a scooter for the first time in Bali: the international permit is required, the helmet compulsory, and insurance may refuse to cover a rider without a valid license.
  4. Paying the e-VoA or the tourist levy on an unofficial website, with service fees.
  5. Planning a boat crossing the day before or the day of the international flight: the swell delays or cancels departures.
  6. Arriving at night in the east or the north: the roads there are narrow, winding and poorly lit.
  7. Filling every day with excursions: the heat, the late-afternoon showers and the road are more tiring than in Europe.

What you can skip on a first trip

You can skip without regret Kuta as a base, the swings and photo “nests” above the rice fields, Nusa Penida as a day trip, the wait for the photo at the Lempuyang gates and the packaged tours sold at the hotel. The time saved goes to the rice fields, the sea and rest.

  • Kuta as a base

Handy for an arrival night, rarely for a stay: bars, shops and traffic jams. Sanur or the Bukit make better first nights.

  • Photo swings

Paid, recent and with nothing traditional about them. A walk on the dykes of Sidemen or Jatiluwih shows more.

  • Nusa Penida as a day trip

The day goes by on a boat and on difficult roads. If the island tempts you, spend a night there, at least from ten days of travel.

  • The Lempuyang queue

The “gates of heaven” facing Agung have become a backdrop with hours of waiting. Skip it if time is short.

  • Packaged tours

The same day often costs much more through a hotel desk than with a driver booked directly, with route and price set in advance.

What often disappoints, and why, is detailed in things to do in Bali. That guide ranks the experiences; this one mainly helps you not to want everything.

The recommended pace: a typical day in Bali

A good day in Bali starts early: visits and walks from the morning, when the sites are calm and the air cool. The middle of the day is for lunch and a nap, in the shade or by the pool. The late afternoon is for the beach, a dance or a temple, before an early dinner.

A typical day on a first trip to Bali, moment by moment
MomentWhat worksWhat works less well
Early morningTemples, rice fields, waterfalls, snorkelingSleeping late and arriving with the groups
Late morningDriving to another base, marketHiking in full sun
MiddayWarung, nap, poolVisiting a very exposed site
Late afternoonBeach, dance, sunsetA long drive before nightfall
EveningEarly dinner, early night if leaving at dawnNight drive in the east or the north
In the rainy season, showers often fall late in the day: bring your outings forward even more.

Keep at least one empty day a week. A village ceremony, a downpour or end-of-trip tiredness will fill it on their own. To work out the cost of the stay without surprises, the budget guide and the calculator start from the same choices: number of bases, days with a driver, crossings.

Frequently asked questions

How many days for a first trip to Bali?

A week allows two bases, Ubud and the sea. Ten days add the rural east. Two weeks allow the east, Nusa Penida and the Bukit without rushing.

Where to sleep the first night in Bali?

If the plane arrives during the day, go straight up to Ubud, about 1 h 15 to 1 h 45 away. If it arrives in the evening, sleep near the airport, in Sanur or on the Bukit.

Should you book all activities before leaving?

No. Most can be booked on the spot, the day before or the same day. Book high-season accommodation and crossings in advance if your dates are tight.

Should you rent a scooter in Bali on a first trip?

Only if you already have experience on two wheels and an international permit. Otherwise, a driver by the day or ride-hailing in the south is safer.

Is Bali a good destination for a first trip to Asia?

Yes: the island is used to visitors, distances remain short and Balinese culture is visible everywhere. The main pitfall is wanting to see everything in a few days.
