From the airport to Uluwatu and the Bukit, without getting stuck

The Bukit, the limestone peninsula that holds Uluwatu, Bingin and Jimbaran, starts almost as you leave the airport. Allow about 45 to 60 min by car. The transfer is short, but two things complicate it: the traffic jams at the foot of the peninsula in the late afternoon, and accommodation scattered along cliff roads where it is easy to get lost.

In brief

  • Time: about 45 to 60 min by car, more at rush hour.
  • Price: no official fare. Ride-hailing at the price shown in the app, a driver at the price set when booking.
  • Best time: in the morning or early afternoon, before the late-afternoon jams at the foot of the Bukit.
  • Good to know: on the spot, every trip is on wheels; arrange transport for the following days as soon as you arrive.

Between Denpasar airport and Uluwatu, allow about 45 to 60 min by car, more in the late afternoon. A booked driver finds the Bukit’s isolated accommodation more easily; ride-hailing works in daytime. No price is official: set it or check it before you get in.

Uluwatu is not a town but the southwestern tip of the Bukit: villages, coves and hotels spread over kilometers of cliff. The transfer from the airport therefore depends as much on the exact address as on the traffic. The region’s page is Uluwatu.

The site’s four itineraries all end on the Bukit, from the 7-day itinerary to the 3-week one: it is mainly the return trip that matters here.

The options to get from the airport to Uluwatu

A booked driver is the safest option for the Bukit, where addresses are scattered and sometimes badly listed. Ride-hailing works in daytime from the airport pick-up points. The airport taxi, at a fixed price, is a fallback. The scooter can wait until the next day.

On the Bukit, also think about the following days: the peninsula is impractical without a scooter or a driver. If you do not ride a two-wheeler, ask your arrival driver whether they can do days on the spot, or check before you leave which apps are available around your accommodation.

The transfer, step by step

After the airport, the road heads south, passes near Jimbaran then climbs onto the Bukit plateau. The last kilometers follow cliff roads, sometimes under repair, to your accommodation. The slow point is often the foot of the peninsula, in the late afternoon.

The pitfalls of the airport–Uluwatu transfer

The pitfalls: the late afternoon at the foot of the Bukit, a vague address in an area without landmarks, a price thrown out by a tout, and the last stretch on foot with suitcases when the hotel is at the bottom of a cliff staircase.

  1. Leaving the airport in the late afternoon: the jams at the foot of the Bukit make the journey much longer.
  2. Saying only “Uluwatu”: the area covers the whole tip of the peninsula. Share the exact location.
  3. Accepting a price quoted in the hall without a reference: go through the counter, the app or your booking.
  4. Forgetting the stairs: around Bingin, some places can only be reached on foot. Ask the hotel whether they send someone for the luggage.

The smart alternative: Jimbaran or Sanur for the last night

If your flight leaves very early and your hotel is at the end of the peninsula, move closer on the last night: Jimbaran, at the foot of the Bukit, or Sanur, about 30 to 40 min from the airport via the expressway. You sleep longer and reduce the risk linked to traffic.

Conversely, for a late flight, stay on the Bukit: the day is spent at the beach, and the 45 to 60 min drive happens in the late afternoon, with a margin. That is the choice of the 10-day itinerary, which suggests Sanur only if the flight leaves early.

The return: from Uluwatu to the airport for your flight

For the return flight, allow about 45 to 60 min to the airport, more at rush hour, then the check-in time set by your airline. For an evening flight, leave before the late-afternoon peak; for a dawn flight, the road is clearer, but keep a margin.

When to leave Uluwatu depending on your flight time
Flight timeAdvice
Early morningClearer road; for an isolated hotel, last night in Jimbaran or Sanur
MiddayLeave in the morning, with a margin
Late afternoonLeave early in the afternoon, before the Bukit jams
Evening or nightLeave in the late afternoon at the latest, or after sunset with a wide margin
Add to the drive the check-in time given by your airline.

Book the driver for the return the day before and have the departure time confirmed. If you are counting on ride-hailing, test the app from the hotel the day before: on some parts of the Bukit, the offer is thinner.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take from Bali airport to Uluwatu?

About 45 to 60 min by car. The journey gets longer in the late afternoon, with jams at the foot of the Bukit.

How much does a taxi from the airport to Uluwatu cost?

There is no official fare. Ride-hailing shows its price in the app, the airport taxi sets it before departure, and a driver when booking: compare and ask what is included.

Should you book a driver for Uluwatu?

It is advisable if your hotel is isolated on the cliff, if you arrive at night or with a family. In daytime, for an easy address, ride-hailing is enough.

Is Uluwatu a good choice for the last night before the flight?

Yes for a daytime or evening flight: the airport is about 45 to 60 min away. For a very early flight from an isolated hotel, Jimbaran or Sanur reduce the risk.

Can you get around the Bukit without a scooter?

Yes, with a driver or ride-hailing, but every trip becomes a ride. Budget for it, or choose a hotel near a beach you can walk to.
