From Canggu to Uluwatu, across the whole south
Canggu and Uluwatu are the two surf bases of the south, but to go from one to the other, you have to cross Seminyak, Kuta, the airport area and the foot of the Bukit. We have no time of our own recorded for it: take as a ceiling the sum of the two transfers from the airport, about 1 h 30 to 2 h 15. The departure time makes all the difference.

The options to get from Canggu to Uluwatu
Ride-hailing is the simplest option: there are plenty of drivers in Canggu, and the ride can be ordered from your accommodation. A booked driver suits surfboards, children or an isolated hotel on the cliff better. A scooter is possible for a seasoned rider, but crossing the south is exhausting.

With surfboards, say so when booking: not every car can carry them. For metered taxis, the rules of getting around Bali apply: meter switched on or price set before getting in.
The transfer, step by step
Four stretches: leaving Canggu through narrow streets, crossing Seminyak and Kuta, passing near the airport, then climbing onto the Bukit via Jimbaran. The two slow points are leaving Canggu and the foot of the Bukit, especially late in the day.

For a surfer, reaching the Bukit in the early afternoon leaves time to scout the beach access points, often down stairs, before a first session the next day. If the driver has nothing to strap the boards with, keep them inside the car and plan for a large enough vehicle.
The pitfalls of the Canggu–Uluwatu transfer
The pitfalls: leaving in the late afternoon and stacking up the jams of Canggu and the Bukit, forgetting to mention the surfboards, giving only “Uluwatu” as the address, and counting on ride-hailing for the following days in a part of the Bukit where fewer drivers are available.
- Leaving in the late afternoon: it is rush hour at both ends of the transfer.
- Not mentioning the boards: ask for a vehicle that can carry them.
- Giving only “Uluwatu”: the area covers the whole tip of the Bukit. Share the exact location.
- Settling on the Bukit with no transport plan: the peninsula is impractical without a scooter or a driver, as the Uluwatu page points out.
The smart alternative: make use of passing near the airport
The transfer passes near the airport: use it to fit the order of your bases to your flight. If your flight leaves at night, end with Uluwatu and do this transfer mid-stay. If it leaves at dawn, rather end with Canggu or with a night in Sanur.
For a surf trip, it is not always worth sleeping in both places: Canggu suits intermediate levels, Uluwatu reef waves. Choosing a single base according to your level saves you this transfer. Both pages detail the spots: Canggu and Uluwatu.
Leaving Uluwatu: to the airport
From Uluwatu, the airport is about 45 to 60 min away, more at rush hour. For an evening flight, leave before the late-afternoon peak; for a dawn flight, the road is clearer. Always add the check-in time set by your airline.
