What April changes on the ground
The sea calms down and clears as the month goes on. The rice fields are green or being harvested depending on the valley. The paths dry out, which reopens the hikes. The waterfalls keep a good flow without the mud of the rainy season.
- Swimming: more pleasant on the west coast than in the rainy season, with cleaner beaches. Sanur remains the calmest.
- Snorkeling and diving: visibility improving in Amed and Tulamben. Nusa Penida becomes more doable, still with a few days of rough sea.
- Surf: start of the season on the Bukit and the west coast, from Uluwatu to Canggu, depending on the swells.
- Rice fields: a mix of green plots, golden ears and harvested fields, different from one valley to the next according to the subak calendar.
- Hikes: Batur clears more often at sunrise. Agung becomes an option again for trained walkers, with a guide, outside closures linked to ceremonies. Sidemen and Munduk are good for walking.
- Roads and waterfalls: safer roads, the waterfalls of Munduk and the center still well fed.
Crowds and prices in April
April stays in the shoulder season: visitor numbers are moderate and prices in the middle of the annual range. They rise during the French spring vacations, which run from mid-April to early May depending on the zone, and around Easter, which also brings Australian visitors.
Outside vacations, accommodation is easy to find, even in Ubud. During the spring vacations, book family places and villas a few weeks ahead. Orders of magnitude by profile are in the Bali travel budget guide, and the budget calculator lets you test several scenarios.
April events
April has no major fixed-date event in Bali. Nyepi generally falls in March: check its date if you arrive at the very start of April. Galungan and Kuningan follow the 210-day cycle of the Balinese calendar and fall in April in some years.
Village ceremonies, the odalan or temple anniversaries, take place all year round according to the Balinese calendar: it is not unusual to come across one. The rules on dress and behavior are in Balinese temples and culture.
What to do in Bali in April
April is the ideal month for the interior of the island: walks in Sidemen, the lakes and waterfalls of Munduk, sunrise on Batur. The sea becomes pleasant at the end of the month, and surf picks up again on the Bukit.
- Sidemen: a walk in the rice fields facing Agung, when the valley dries out but stays green. See Sidemen.
- Munduk: lakes Bratan and Tamblingan, waterfalls and forest trails, more doable than in the rainy season. See Munduk.
- Batur: a night climb for sunrise, with better chances of a view than in March.
- Uluwatu: the first surf sessions of the dry season and sunsets over the cliffs.
