What February changes on the ground
The sea is often rough and less clear, especially in the west. The rice fields are green or flooded depending on the valley. Batur and Agung are frequently in the clouds at sunrise. Mountain roads get slippery, and the waterfalls overflow after storms.
- Swimming: stronger currents and waves on the west coast, beaches from Kuta to Canggu often covered with litter washed up by the sea. Sanur and Amed are calmer.
- Snorkeling and diving: variable visibility. Amed and the Tulamben wreck remain doable most days; boats to Nusa Penida are sometimes cancelled in rough seas.
- Surf: the east coast, from Keramas to the Sanur reefs, takes over from the Bukit.
- Rice fields: very green, with flooded plots in some valleys and ears in others, according to each subak’s calendar.
- Hikes: Batur doable, view uncertain. Agung is not recommended in this season. Walks in Sidemen and Ubud are done early.
- Roads and waterfalls: take care on a scooter, especially on mountain roads. The waterfalls are impressive but their stairs are slippery, and some access points close after heavy rain.
Crowds and prices in February
February is generally one of the quietest months of the year: few groups, available accommodation and prices at the bottom of the annual range. Two exceptions: the French winter vacations, staggered by zone, and Chinese New Year when it falls in February.
French school winter vacations are spread over several weeks between February and early March, depending on the zone. They mainly bring families to the south and Ubud, without creating saturation comparable to the summer. Chinese New Year, on a variable date, can also fill the south for a few days.
For accommodation, February sits at the bottom of the range: common discounts for several nights, more affordable villas, rooms often negotiable on the spot. To cost your stay, see the Bali travel budget guide and the budget calculator.
February events
February has no major fixed-date event in Bali. Galungan and Kuningan, which follow the 210-day cycle of the Balinese calendar, fall in February in some years. If you leave in late February, also check the date of Nyepi, which generally falls in March.
Nyepi, the day of silence, closes the airport for 24 hours. Its date follows the Balinese calendar and is announced by the authorities; in 2027, it is expected in early March, official date to be confirmed. The details are in the best time to visit Bali guide and on the Bali in March page.
What to do in Bali in February
Make the most of the quiet and the green: rice fields and temples around Ubud in the morning, the east coast and diving in Amed, the water temples of Tirta Gangga. Book sea activities with a day’s margin and keep a list of sheltered activities for the afternoons.
- Ubud: a walk in the rice fields at dawn, Tirta Empul temple, artisans’ workshops. See Ubud.
- Amed: snorkeling from the beach and diving on the Tulamben wreck, on the driest coast of the island. See Amed.
- Tirta Gangga: royal pools and gardens, on the road from Ubud to Amed, very green in this season.
- Sidemen: a night in the valley to see the rice fields without the crowds.
Who February is the right month for
February suits small budgets, travelers looking for quiet and rice field lovers. It suits divers aiming for Nusa Penida, hikers who want Agung and those counting on the beach every day less well.
Families
Possible during the winter vacations, with a calm base and short days. Repellent is essential: mosquitoes are more numerous in the rainy season.
Surfers
East coast rather than the Bukit. The schools on the southern beaches welcome beginners all year round.
Divers
Amed and Tulamben are the safe bets. Nusa Penida depends on the state of the sea, to be checked the day before.
Hikers
Low-altitude walks in the rice fields. Batur remains possible, with no guarantee of a view.
Small budgets
One of the best months: low prices, availability, negotiation possible for long stays.
Honeymoon
A good month for a quiet villa in Ubud or Sidemen, if you accept rainy afternoons.
A short route that suits it: the 7-day itinerary. To reach the east coast, see the Ubud → Amed transfer, and the packing list for rain gear.
