Traveling alone in Bali: real safety, where to stay, how to meet people
Bali is one of the simplest destinations in Asia for a first solo trip: the island is used to visitors, distances are short and you find classes, hostels and small-group outings everywhere. The real risks lie elsewhere than where you expect them.

Key points
- The main risks are the road, the sea and health, more than crime.
- Canggu and Ubud are the most social bases; Amed for diving, Sidemen to find some peace.
- Alone, you pay for the whole room: hostels and guesthouses change the budget.
- The e-VoA covers 30 days, extendable once: beyond that, or to work, look into a suitable visa.
This guide is for those traveling alone, for a few weeks or a few months. It does not replace your government’s travel advice for Indonesia, to read before departure, nor the health and safety in Bali guide. It covers what traveling alone changes: where to sleep, how to meet people, how much to plan for and at what pace.

Safety in Bali when traveling solo: the real risks
The risks that most affect solo travelers in Bali are the road, especially by scooter, the sea and its currents, digestive troubles, dengue, animal bites and petty theft in very busy areas. A few simple habits reduce them considerably.
| Risk | Precaution |
|---|---|
| Scooter | International driving permit and helmet, or ride-hailing and a driver; never after drinking |
| Sea | Patrolled beaches, flags, never alone far from the shore |
| Health | Bottled water, repellent during the day, insurance with repatriation |
| Animals | No contact with dogs or monkeys: rabies is present |
| Petty theft | Bag closed, phone put away in crowds and by the roadside |
| Drinks | Sealed bottles, glass kept in sight in bars |
Women traveling alone commonly get around Bali. Common-sense rules apply as elsewhere: share your itinerary with someone close, choose accommodation with a reception or a host present for the first nights, book a driver through your hotel or an app rather than outside a bar.
Where to stay alone in Bali, depending on what you are looking for
Canggu to meet people easily, surf and work remotely; Ubud for classes, yoga and culture; Uluwatu for good-level surfing; Amed for diving, with centers that house their divers; Sidemen or Munduk to find peace for a few days.
| Region | Atmosphere | Accommodation | Budget per night |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canggu | Social, cafés, surf, nomads | Hostel, guesthouse | IDR 300,000 to 700,000 (≈ €15 to €35) |
| Ubud | Classes, yoga, culture | Balinese homestay, hostel | IDR 200,000 to 500,000 (≈ €10 to €25) |
| Amed | Diving, quiet evenings | Dive guesthouse | IDR 200,000 to 500,000 (≈ €10 to €25) |
In Canggu, Batu Bolong lets you do everything on foot: beach, surf schools, cafés. In Ubud, a Balinese homestay, often run by a family within the walls of their home, is the best gateway to village life. The neighborhoods are compared in detail on where to stay in Canggu.
Meeting other travelers in Bali
You mainly meet people by doing something together: surf, cooking or yoga classes, dive outings, a small-group climb of Batur, hostels with common areas. The coworking spaces of Canggu and Ubud bring nomads together. Homestays open up conversation with the Balinese.
- Classes: beginner surfing in Canggu or Kuta, Balinese cooking and yoga in Ubud. You see the same faces several days in a row.
- Diving: in Amed, small-group outings and meals at the center create a circle within a few days.
- Batur: departure around 3 a.m., about 2 h of climbing, and a sunrise shared with the group.
- Hostels: dorms and private rooms, with common areas and organized outings.
- Homestays: your host will point you to a village ceremony, the clothes to wear and the moment when you can attend without intruding.
Ceremonies are the strongest opportunity to meet the Balinese, provided you follow the rules: sarong and sash, shoulders covered, do not stand in front of the priests. The Balinese temples and culture guide details them.
What a solo trip to Bali costs
Alone, you pay for the whole room and the whole driver: these two items cost almost double per person compared with traveling as a couple. Meals in warungs, beaches, walks and most temples remain inexpensive. Hostels, ride-hailing in the south and group outings rebalance the bill.
| Item | Alone | How to reduce it |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | The whole room | Hostel, homestay, negotiated long stay |
| Driver | The whole day | Small-group excursion, ride-hailing in the south |
| Boat | Same price as for two | Nothing to gain, except by avoiding middlemen |
| Meals | Same price as for two | Warungs and markets |
| Fixed costs | e-VoA IDR 500,000, levy IDR 150,000 | Pay only on the official websites |
To cost your stay, use the budget calculator with one traveler, then compare with the budget guide. The first lever, alone as for two, remains the number of bases: fewer changes, fewer days with a driver.
The right pace for a solo trip
Alone, you tend to move too much. Stay at least three to four nights per base, more in the one where you feel good, and alternate a social base, such as Canggu or Ubud, with a calm one, such as Sidemen or Amed. Keep days without a program: they are for meeting people.
The 2-week itinerary gives a good framework: Ubud, the east, Nusa Penida, the Bukit. Alone, you can slow it down, add Canggu for surfing or extend Amed for diving. The most common journey between two social bases, Ubud → Canggu, takes as long as airport to Ubud: leave in the late morning.
The month matters too: in May, the dry season begins and the summer crowds are not there yet. Hostels and classes are well filled without being saturated.
Digital nomads: visa, wifi, neighborhoods
The e-VoA costs IDR 500,000 for 30 days, extendable once by 30 days: it is a tourist visa. For a longer stay or professional activity, look into suitable visas on the official immigration portal. As for neighborhoods, Canggu, in Berawa and Pererenan, and Ubud concentrate the offer.
- Visa: check the categories and their conditions only on evisa.imigrasi.go.id, not on intermediary websites.
- Wifi: ask the host for a speed test screenshot before booking by the month, and have a local SIM card as backup.
- Outages: power cuts are more frequent in the east; to work, accommodation with a generator avoids unpleasant surprises.
- Monthly stays: guesthouses and villas often offer a monthly rate; negotiate it on the spot after a first week.
- Insurance: a standard travel policy rarely covers a stay of several months; check the maximum duration.
