Where to stay on Nusa Penida: sleep on the island, and well placed
Sleeping on Nusa Penida changes the visit: you reach the cliffs before the boats from Bali, and you see the evening light. But the island remains under-equipped, with damaged roads, little fresh water and power cuts. The right accommodation is the one that shortens the next day’s drives. Here are the areas, the types and the observed ranges.

In brief
- North coast, around Ped, for a first visit; Toyapakeh and Crystal Bay for the west; the east for quiet.
- The inland roads are damaged: badly placed accommodation adds an hour a day.
- Observed range for a comfortable double room: IDR 700,000 to 1,600,000 (≈ €35 to €80).
- Ask whether the water is fresh, whether there is a generator and whether the transfer from the harbor is included.
On Nusa Penida, stay on the north coast, around Ped, for a first visit: harbors, warungs and easier roads. Choose Toyapakeh or Crystal Bay to set off early to the west, the east for quiet.
Nusa Penida takes at least two days to visit, the west then the east, as detailed on the Nusa Penida page. Here, you choose where to sleep so that those two days start in the right place. The boat arrives on the north coast; everything starts from there.
The prices given are observed ranges, not the rates of any one property. The budget guide puts them into the cost of a trip, and the Sanur → Nusa Penida page details the crossing, the swell and the return.

Nusa Penida’s areas, one by one
Four areas: Ped and the north coast, between the landing points and the Pura Dalem Ped temple; Toyapakeh, in the northwest, facing Nusa Lembongan; Crystal Bay, on the west coast; and the east coast, above Atuh. The north coast is the easiest, the west the most practical for the cliffs.
Ped and the north coast
The flattest coastal road on the island, between the landing points and the great temple of Ped: warungs, minimarkets, scooter rentals, most of the guesthouses. The easiest base for two days, halfway between the west and the east. At night, you hear the road, then calm returns; the temple ceremonies draw crowds on some days.
Toyapakeh
In the northwest, a small beach facing the strait and Nusa Lembongan, with a landing point and a few hotels. You sleep in quiet, with restaurants on foot. It is the closest starting point for Crystal Bay and, via the interior, for Kelingking.
Crystal Bay
A bay on the west coast, popular for snorkeling and sunsets. Bungalows and simple cafés, few services. You set off for Kelingking and Broken Beach before the day trips from Bali. In the evening, there is almost nothing, and the inland road to the north is bad.
The east coast, above Atuh
Isolated bungalows and small hotels, above Atuh and Diamond Beach, facing the sea. Complete silence, and the sunrise over the cliffs. In return, a long drive to the west and little choice for dinner. Keep it for a third night.
| Area | Who it suits | At night | On foot to | Observed range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ped, north coast | First visit, tight budget | Coastal road, temple | Landing points, warungs, rentals | IDR 300,000 to 1,600,000 (≈ €15 to €80) |
| Toyapakeh | Couples, setting off west | Quiet | Beach, restaurants, landing point | IDR 500,000 to 3,000,000 (≈ €25 to €150) |
| Crystal Bay | Snorkeling, sunsets | Very quiet | The bay, simple cafés | IDR 400,000 to 2,000,000 (≈ €20 to €100) |
| East coast | Third night, restful stay | Silence | Nothing: a vehicle for everything | IDR 800,000 to 5,000,000 (≈ €40 to €250) |

Types of accommodation on Nusa Penida
The island mainly offers family guesthouses and bungalows, a few hotels with a pool on the north coast and isolated lodges on the eastern cliffs. Villas with a private pool remain few, chain hotels absent. Comfort costs more than on Bali, because everything arrives by boat.
| Type | You gain | You lose | Observed range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balinese homestay | Price, welcome, a driver found by the family | Simple comfort, sometimes cold water | IDR 300,000 to 500,000 (≈ €15 to €25) |
| Family guesthouse | Bungalow, breakfast, transfer from the harbor | Variable facilities | IDR 400,000 to 900,000 (≈ €20 to €45) |
| Chain hotel | Absent from the island | See Sanur | Nothing on offer |
| Villa with pool | Privacy, view | Few of them, difficult access | IDR 1,500,000 to 5,000,000 (≈ €75 to €250) |
| Ecolodge | Cliff bungalows, sea view | Isolation, limited water and power | IDR 800,000 to 3,000,000 (≈ €40 to €150) |
| Hostel | Price, meeting people | Few of them, north coast | IDR 100,000 to 200,000 (≈ €5 to €10) per bed |
Many places offer the transfer from the landing point and a driver for the day. It is often the safest solution for those who are not confident on a scooter: ask for the price when you book, in writing.
How much a night costs on Nusa Penida
Three price levels per night for a double room: the north coast guesthouse on a tight budget, the hotel with a pool for comfortable, the cliff lodge or villa for upscale.
Budget, per night
≈ €15 to €30
IDR 300,000 to 600,000
Comfortable, per night
≈ €35 to €80
IDR 700,000 to 1,600,000
High end, per night
≈ €100 to €250
IDR 2,000,000 to 5,000,000
Observed ranges per night for a double room, outside the July-August and holiday peaks: orders of magnitude, not the prices of any one property. €1 ≈ IDR 20,000 (mid-October 2026, rounded).
On the island, comfort costs more than in Sanur for an often lower level of equipment: water, fuel and building materials arrive by boat. Add each day’s driver or scooter to the budget.
What to check before booking on Nusa Penida
Check four points specific to the island: the water, fresh or not, and its pressure; a generator, power cuts being frequent; the state of the access road, sometimes a dirt track; and the transfer from the landing point. Wifi remains modest almost everywhere.
- Hot water and fresh water: the island lacks water, ask what comes out of the tap.
- Generator: very useful, power cuts are frequent.
- Mosquito nets: to check, especially in open bungalows.
- Fan or air conditioning: the island is dry and hot; air conditioning is sometimes charged extra.
- Access: paved road or dirt track, steepness, car to the entrance.
- Noise: coastal road in the north, temple, roosters; elsewhere, almost nothing.
- Wifi: modest; do not plan remote work without a test.
Common mistakes on Nusa Penida
The typical mistakes: coming for the day instead of sleeping on the island, booking a single night in the east and then crossing the island twice, renting a scooter without experience, and planning the return to Sanur the day before a flight. The swell can cancel boats.
- Doing the round trip in a day: you spend most of the time on the road.
- Booking the night in the east when you visit the west the next day: crossing the island takes hours.
- Renting a scooter without experience: steep roads, gravel, potholes.
- Returning to Sanur the day before a flight: in a swell, departures are cancelled.
