The pitfalls of the crossing to Nusa Penida

The pitfalls: planning the return the day before a flight, when the swell can cancel departures; boarding with a big suitcase on a boat you reach through the water; renting a scooter on the island without experience; and thinking one day is enough to see the island.

  1. Planning the return the day before the flight: in rough seas, boats are canceled. Keep at least one night in Bali before the plane.
  2. Leaving with a big suitcase: leave it at your accommodation in Sanur and go with a bag.
  3. Renting a scooter on the island without experience: the roads to Kelingking and the east are damaged and steep. Take a local driver.
  4. Doing the island as a return trip: on a day trip, you mostly see the road. Two nights are advisable.

The smart alternative: sleep on the island

The best way to do Nusa Penida is to sleep there two nights. You cross in the morning, see the western cliffs late in the day, Kelingking early the next morning before the day trips from Bali, and return without rushing. The crossing becomes an ordinary transfer.

The areas to sleep in are described on the Nusa Penida page: the north coast for the harbors and easy roads, the west for Kelingking and Crystal Bay, the east for peace and quiet. Nusa Lembongan, its neighbor, is smaller and quieter.

The return from Nusa Penida to Bali

Flight the same dayAvoid: a canceled boat makes you miss the plane
Next base in UluwatuMorning boat, then Sanur → airport (30 to 40 min) and 45 to 60 min to the Bukit
Next base in UbudMorning boat, then the road to the center, avoiding the late afternoon
This is the sequence of the 2- and 3-week itineraries: boat, then Uluwatu for the last days.

Keep the receipt and the operator’s name at hand at the harbor, and ask when buying whether the return time can be changed: in case of swell, it saves buying a new ticket.
