Where to stay in Sanur: as close to the promenade as you can

Sanur stretches along a seafront promenade, facing a sea calmed by the reef. You sleep in garden hotels, family guesthouses and a few villas, at gentler prices than on the west coast. The rule fits in one sentence: stay between the sea and the main street. Here are the areas, the types and the observed ranges.

In brief

  • In the north for the boat harbor to Nusa Penida, in the center to do everything on foot, in the south for quiet.
  • Avoid addresses along the expressway: noisy and cut off from the sea.
  • Observed range for a comfortable double room: IDR 700,000 to 1,600,000 (≈ €35 to €80).
  • About 30 to 40 minutes from the airport: a good first or last night.

In Sanur, stay in the center, between the beach and Danau Tamblingan street, to do everything on foot; in the north to take the boat to Nusa Penida; in the south for quiet.

Sanur is the quietest base in the south, with a sea suitable for children at high tide and a cycle path along the promenade. What there is to do is described on the Sanur page; here, you choose the area, the type of room and the budget.

The prices given are observed ranges, not the rates of any one property. The budget guide puts them into the total cost, and the airport → Sanur page explains why Sanur makes a good first night.

Sanur’s areas, one by one

Three areas along the sea: the north beach, near the boat harbor; the center, around Danau Tamblingan street, parallel to the beach; the south beach, towards Semawang and Mertasari. A fourth, to avoid, runs along the expressway to the west, far from the sea.

The north beach, near the harbor

Around Matahari Terbit beach, where the boats to Nusa Penida leave from. Practical the day before an early morning crossing: the harbor is within walking distance. The area is busier by day, with passengers coming and going, and quieter in the evening.

The center, Danau Tamblingan street

Between the promenade and Danau Tamblingan street, which runs parallel to the sea: restaurants, minimarkets, spas and garden hotels opening onto the beach. The best compromise for a family without a car. The street is busy in the evening, but without noisy nightlife.

The south beach, Semawang and Mertasari

More residential, with large gardens, a beach frequented by Balinese families on weekends and by kitesurfers in the dry season. Nights are very quiet. It takes 10 to 20 minutes by bike or ride-hailing to reach the restaurants in the center.

Along the expressway

West of Sanur, the expressway linking the airport to the east of the island. Addresses there are cheaper, but noisy day and night and separated from the sea by a road that is hard to cross on foot. Book only for a transit night.

Types of accommodation in Sanur

Sanur is the territory of garden hotels, often old and well maintained, and of family guesthouses set back from the beach. There are also villas for families, a few chain hotels on the seafront and very few hostels. Ecolodges are absent.

For a family, a garden hotel on the beach remains the most restful option: pool, shade, a calm sea a few steps away. Compare the real size of family rooms, often two connecting rooms rather than a suite.

How much a night costs in Sanur

Three price levels per night for a double room: the inland guesthouse on a tight budget, the hotel with a pool for comfortable, the seafront for upscale.

  • Budget, per night

    ≈ €15 to €30

    IDR 300,000 to 600,000

Guesthouse or homestay inland, air conditioning, beach 5 to 10 minutes away

  • Comfortable, per night

    ≈ €35 to €80

    IDR 700,000 to 1,600,000

Garden hotel with pool, beach on foot

  • High end, per night

    ≈ €100 to €300

    IDR 2,000,000 to 6,000,000

Beachfront hotel or family villa with private pool

Observed ranges per night for a double room, outside the July-August and holiday peaks: orders of magnitude, not the prices of any one property. €1 ≈ IDR 20,000 (mid-October 2026, rounded).

Sanur remains cheaper than Seminyak or Canggu for the same comfort. Sea-facing rooms cost noticeably more than garden-side rooms in the same hotel: look at both.

What to check before booking in Sanur

Check which side of the main street the hotel is on, the real distance to the beach, the size of family rooms and the age of the facilities: in Sanur, many hotels are old. For the night before a crossing, look at the distance to the harbor.

  • Hot water: generally reliable in hotels, to check in small guesthouses.
  • Generator: present in most hotels, not always in guesthouses.
  • Mosquito nets: useful in the south, near the mangrove.
  • Air conditioning: essential on the coast; a fan alone is barely enough in the humid season.
  • Access: beach side or expressway side of the main street, pavements for a stroller.
  • Noise: expressway, nearby temple on ceremony days, roosters.
  • Wifi: fine on the whole, to test for video calls.

Common mistakes in Sanur

The typical mistakes: booking “Sanur” along the expressway, far from the sea; expecting a swimming beach at all hours when low tide exposes the reef; and sleeping in the south the night before a very early boat to Nusa Penida.

  1. Trusting the name “Sanur” in the listing: part of the offer is west of the expressway.
  2. Forgetting the tide: at low tide, the sea goes out a long way and swimming becomes difficult.
  3. Sleeping in Mertasari the night before an 08:00 boat: the harbor is in the north, allow for the drive.
  4. Choosing Sanur to go out in the evening: nightlife there is deliberately low-key.
